TRANSNATIONAL RED SEA CENTER - Djibouti Workshop

The Transnational Red Sea Center is a scientific research center created in 2019 at the Ecole Polytechnique fédérale in Lausanne (EPFL) with the official support of the Swiss Foreign Ministry. As an independent and not-for-profit organization, the Center capitalizes on Switzerland’s neutrality, its longstanding tradition of promoting dialogue and its reputation for scientific excellence to bridge science and diplomacy for the future of coral reefs.

At the end of April, we joined the Transnational Red Sea Center team in Djibouti to document a workshop organised by the TRSC in partnership with the Université de Djibouti (UD) in close collaboration with the local authorities.
During the workshop, some hundred and twenty second-year Bachelor students from the Faculty of Science were introduced to the biology of coral reefs through lectures and hands-on experience. Over six days, they learned about local and global threats to these fragile ecosystems and the challenges and methods to preserve them.
For most of these young men and women, the majority not even in their early twenties, this workshop was their first opportunity to discover the coral reef environment first-hand.
